    I love the storm metaphor, especially if you visualize it with ocean waves and rocks. The crescendos being the waves getting bigger and subsiding, while the thunder strikes in the background. It's a dark, but beautiful scene. This is my absolute favorite Bach piece, and I love your explanations and methods here. :) Also you play beautifully!

    and make sure to not change the dynamics (too much) cuz Bach made this for klavier

    • @pianocareer
      @pianocareer 6 днів тому

      If Bach was alive today, he would definitely write for the piano, and even for electric instruments. He was a visionary and an innovator - and he placed great value on improvisation. Therefore, restricting our expressive palette to match the technical possibilities of the old klavier is quite a myopic approach, in my professional opinion. His music is greater than any instrument. This Prelude needs convincing dynamics that are derived from its concept, harmonic structure, dramaturgy and phrasing.

      @@sswdasadw To have a deeper understanding of the expressive potential of Bach's music, I recommend listening to his choral works - for example the Mass in B Minor, or the St. Matthew Passion. His vision was much greater than the limited potential of the old klavier/harpsichord 😊. If you listen to any great pianist performing Bach's klavier or organ music, you will notice what I mean. Still, it's obviously ok to have your own interpretation - after all, our art is infinitely complex and flexible (and Bach thought so too).

    • @pianocareer

      Of course, we are all unique and learn at our own speed. However, it someone struggles with 'feeling' phrasing, it usually means that this important expressive effect is not taught correctly. Phrasing is both art and science - and sadly the science part is slowly being forgotten nowadays.

    Was Evgeny Kissin trained in the Russian method of piano playing too? I can observe in his playing the principles that you have been talking about (whole arm action etc.).

    • @pianocareer

      Yes, of course he was - just like many other great pianists such as Emil Gilels, Sviatoslav Richter, Vladimir Horowitz, Heinrich and Stanislav Neuhaus, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Tatiana Nikolayeva, Lev Oborin, Vera Gornostaeva, Valentina Lisitsa (and many many others). In this context it's very important to not confuse art with politics and the current war tragedies.

      @@pianocareer Can I ask a question? Is rotation applicable to Bach's Prelude in C minor BWV 999? Will it help me play without tension? I really am struggling with playing tension-free as I have been with teachers who taught me finger isolation technique before and for the most part I was just self taught except for a couple of teachers who I said taught me finger isolation technique based piano playing.

    • @pianocareer
      @pianocareer 12 днів тому

      @@jojoestoy To my knowledge, 'rotation' is a term mainly used by the followers of the Taubman method. In the Russian system, it is either not used at all, or it has a different meaning. I prefer the terms 'wrist flexibility', 'wrist relaxation' and 'wrist anticipation'. You also need to be aware that wrist technique is an inseparable part of whole-arm action, and cannot be used (or learned) on its own. Simply put - having a flexible wrist (or 'rotating' it) will not help much if your posture is wrong, if you're sitting too close to the instrument (or too low), if you're not channeling weight from the back, or if your arms are tensed and you're using the 'finger-only' technique. In the professional method I teach, ergonomic wrist technique is taught from day one, in a progressive manner - together with the fundamental non-legato weighted key attack (which is the best way to learn whole-arm action). As our students progress through the Lessons of our Beginner Course, they gradually incorporate more and more wrist movements into their playing (such as horizontal navigation, relaxation during weight transfer etc.). Simply 'rotating' your wrist in playing a late beginner piece (without re-building your technique correctly) will not accomplish anything. So my recommendation is to join PCA - and learn how to play correctly, in a step-by-step manner, not skipping any steps (technique, sound production, relaxation, aural training, expressive skills etc.) 😊. At the very least, you should watch a couple of my free UA-cam videos focused on proper posture and key attack, overcoming tension or efficient practice, for example: How to Avoid Piano Injuries [ ua-cam.com/video/tf2rbCjOpfA/v-deo.html ] The 5 Basic Elements of a Correct Piano Posture [ ua-cam.com/video/InqmH-o1cX0/v-deo.html ] The Secrets of a Correct Piano Key Attack [ ua-cam.com/video/Y8xF8F6mykM/v-deo.html ] Take A Deep Breath - Relax Your Wrist! • @pianocareer
      @pianocareer 20 днів тому

      There might be teachers who specialize in that. Still, whole-arm action and weighted playing (the professional technique I teach in all my tutorials) is healthy, ergonomic and tension/pain free. If you suffer from arthritis, it makes sense to use a natural, fluid and comfortable technique that does not cause EXTRA issues (as the old-school 'finger' technique tends to do). Supplementing your practice with a daily exercise regimen can also be helpful (my mother has suffered from arthritis for the last 20+ years, and exercise helps her a LOT to stay flexible and manage pain). Diet plays a big role too. Good luck, I hope you find a solution that works for you! 😉

I don't have a tutorial focused on this piece yet - but I hope to get to it one day 😊 Generally speaking, when we feel stuck in our practice, we need to return to the basics: hands separately, very slowly first, non-legato, using the 'magnifying glass' method (where we isolate each little difficulty and bring it to perfection before integrating it into a bigger structure). I have detailed tutorials on this topic on PianoCareerAcademy.com - where I demonstrate this method in a clear step-by-step manner 😉.

I've watched hundreds of hours of piano tutorials to try to figure out how to play properly after a long break from piano and being 100% self taught. The Russian method seems to make the most sense to me and these videos explain things so thoroughly that I think I'm going to get a membership on the website. Thank you so much for putting the work into making these tutorials. In the end anger recedes and is replaced with miserable acceptance of this loss. Love, never to be felt again, alone. If you don’t cry when play this you don’t have it yet.

    Hi, great videos, I’m glad to finally find a channel with good technique. I have a question though (based on Arrau’s technique)… Why do you contract the shoulder and back when you sink into the keys? Isn’t it easier to just drop the arm using only gravity? That way you wouldn’t have to make any effort at the exact moment you play (except for the fingers that are quickly holding the weight). Like a sack of potatoes that just drops without resistance, controlling the dynamic by how much you lift before (contraction before vs contraction whilst playing)? Also, I’d be interested to hear your opinion on Arrau… Keep up the good work🙃👍🏻

And, of course, Arrau doesn't deserve anything less. Still, I can answer your other question shortly: Indeed, in many cases it is enough to use the force of gravity alone for depressing a key. This is actually what we do during the fundamental non-legato key attack (which is the basic exercise for learning whole-arm action). In this case, our approximate sound intensity is mezzo-forte (but this also depends on the individual weight of our arm). However, often we need to produce a more powerful and resonant sound. Some people (especially tall men with heavy bones and arms) don't need to 'press' much into the keys in such cases. Others, however (for example light-boned women like me) need extra energy to produce the same result (which we take from the back and shoulder muscles, not from the weak fingers). The quality/character of the sound is another thing to consider: if we 'drop' the arm, this results in a sharp sound. If this is our purpose, no problem. However, most often we need to create a beautiful, velvety, deep and resonant tone. This requires less 'descent velocity' for a gradual, 'sinking' key attack. We can only control it by using muscle engagement. All of this (and much much more) is explained in our step-by-step Courses and tutorials at PianoCareerAcademy.com 😉.

    It was very hard to understand what "flow" of energy means... But I think the gel reference might help me. If I'm touching gel, or dough, or wet sand, I HAVE to use my back. I HAVE to use my hips, knees, legs, if I want to hit the keys in Fortissimo. With those examples, I can understand why the piano is body involved, not finger involved. I hope I can implement this method. Thank you!

      Energy flow, gel, dough etc. - all of these are just metaphors that help us to understand the needed sensations 😊. You only need one of them to 'click' for you - so it's ok if 'energy flow' doesn't work. You could also imagine that a powerful stream of water flows from your back through your arms and into the keys - while the keyboard itself is a soft pillow into which you can 'sink' your entire weight 😉. Whole-arm action is also taught from scratch, in a step-by-step manner, in our Courses at PianoCareerAcademy.com.

    Hi, I am an impatient beginner (aged now 65!) and bought my piano 7 years ago in order to learn how to play "Opening" by Philip Glass, I moved on to "metamorphosis 4" and numerous other pieces which I can play up to a certain point but fail to complete because of their complexity/my lack of ability and knowledge. It's complicated by the fact that I have severe ADD which means that although I am not stupid, I simply cannot sight read music and have to constantly check the score against my idiot sheet of musical notation and keyboard diagram-it's like every single note has to be "coded" into what passes for my "brain"! Still, I am extremely persistent if I can believe in the end result so have decided to learn from you-from the beginning, my approach is too much like trying to roller-skate up a mountain! I like your manner and am tuned into your way of explanation, this is greatly encouraging-so glad I found you!

      Hi! Thank you so much! 😊 Please don't worry about sight-reading. This advanced skill is indeed very useful for professionals, but in the beginning our main focus is on correct technique, sound production, ear training, expression and READING (which is different than SIGHT-reading) 😇. I have detailed tutorials on this topic on PCA. Plus, our Beginner Course has a very step-by-step structure. For every tiny element of musical notation that is introduced in a certain lesson, there are TONS of other important skills to be learned (that do not require symbol-decoding). In other words, the professional method I teach is 90% practice, and only 10% theory/reading. Also, the video above was published more than 12 years ago. Since then PianoCareerAcademy has grown beyond all expectation, offering so much more than I described in this old "Intro". I hope you enjoy every step of the way! ;)
